If a stranger made a comment about your child, how would you react?
Liz, a mother of two, was spending the day with her 6-year-old daughter in a store when a stranger approached her child.
The stranger, whom the American woman described as a “grown man,” turned and looked at the 6-year-old.
“I guess your mother didn’t teach you manners…”
“My God, you are beautiful,” the man reportedly told the child.
While Liz admitted that her daughter was “beautiful,” she also noted how odd the compliment was.
“My 6-year-old is amazing, yes, but he’s also very tuned in and perceptive,” she shared on TikTok.
Unlike Liz, who describes herself as “very cold”, her 6-year-old is much more of an “introvert” and was so scared of the man that she “grabbed my leg really hard”.
But Liz kept him calm, instead standing in silence as the man repeated himself.
“Of course you are beautiful,” said the stranger to the 6-year-old girl. “Look at those blue eyes.”
Liz’s daughter “grabs me a little tighter”, while the American woman stands with an “awkward” smile, hoping to get the man to leave.
But he wasn’t leaving.
“He’s a boomer and God loves him,” the woman shared. “And he said, ‘I guess your mother didn’t teach you manners.'”
Liz let out a little uncomfortable [noise]”, letting the tension of the silence try and tell the man they were uncomfortable; she made it clear she was in no mood to feel “grateful”.
“The pause was long,” she said. “It was long. And under his breath, he said, “Don’t guess.”
The mother-of-two “knew we were going to be here for a while” so she mustered the strength to send him the message in the most “kind, firm, Jesus-loving” way possible.
“If you assumed I didn’t teach my 6-year-old daughter to say ‘thank you’ to a grown, accepting man when he compliments her looks, then you’d be right,” she told him.
“And there was silence for another five minutes,” Liz continued. “And it was the longest silence of my life.”
“Stranger Danger Over Obligatory Courtesy Every Time”
The video quickly went viral, with parents around the world praising Liz for her efforts to protect her daughter.
“Weirdest risk over mandatory decency every time,” someone said. “Good job, Mom!” another agreed.
“I would have said, ‘My daughter or I are under no obligation to respond to unsolicited comments from strangers,'” one comment read.
“I’m so glad moms are standing up for their boundaries,” wrote a fourth.
“You are kinder than me. I’m just starting to bring out the creepiness,” one woman replied.
“You spend a lot of time talking to children, don’t you know?”
But not everyone was on Liz’s side, with some arguing that the stranger may have just been being polite.
“Sometimes people are just being nice,” reasoned one person.
“I often try to compliment people,” read one comment. “He never cared what their reaction was. Just trying to be friendly or polite. I just smile and go about my day.”
